I'm not 100% sure why these friendships seem to be considered more transitory, but they are, which has been one of the most distasteful things I have experienced on the scene.</i><br /><br />Yes, I agree that the groups can often actually be friends rather than cliques, although certain aspects of clique-ness can occur, such as the transitory friendships you mention.
